There are places we carry. Places lived, places loved, places we can only dream of. These places are ours, they are the homes of many or a few. They are mountains, roads, houses, oceans...they are forever changing in real time but for now, here they are still. By painting places where I have loved I am able to be reminded of memories and moments made. I can be swimming in the cold Atlantic off of the Gloucester Coast, I can be walking the streets of my college town, I can be falling in and out of love again.
Some of these aerial paintings are not pure sentiment. I have come to look at them with an ecological lens. To survey and explore the impact humans have on the land. Roads & buildings are left blank in an abstract and simple representation of the landscape and place. Some depict the pastoral centers of the Northeast Kingdom, while others look to cities, fracking, oil pipelines, and industrial agriculture.
This work is a lifelong exploration of how mankind connects to the land. In 2007, I painted my very first aerial of Findhorn, Scotland. It was a gift for my younger brother but I was hooked. I was fascinated by how aerials sparked memory, sense of place, and curiosity. I invite the viewer to join me. To reflect on their own memories, connection to place, and sense of place. This series explores how we remember, interact, and explore place. Each painting is an interpretation of aerial views from all around the country.
Commissions
Interested in having one of your favorite places painted? I love working with individuals and families to make original work that is unique to you and your sense of place.
The process:
Step 1 - Inspiration
Think of a place you love and why. Maybe it is a place you visited, fell for, lived in, or have not yet explored. The why is important. What draws you to this place? What are your memories and/or visions?
Contact me with the physical address, thoughts/memories, size needs, and any other details that you want to add.
Step 2 - Creation!
Once I have the location of this place then I choose a composition, color scheme, and start painting! Pricing depends on the size of the work an 8.5 x 11 piece (unmatted and unframed) is $150. Pricing increases from there.
Step 3 - A Present Awaits!
This is my favorite part...giving it to you! With every commission I include the original image and a hand written note.
Enjoy!
